Day 1: Sai Gon – Ben Tre - Tra Vinh (L/D) (25 - 45 km)
8:00 AM picked up at the hotel by our Mekong Biking Tours team, relax an hour and a half driving on A/C van/bus through modern HCM city from Tra Vinh, Mekong Delta. We will arrive in the countryside of Ham Luong at about 10:00 am. To begin the morning ride with off-road cycling adventures on mixed asphalt country back road, smooth concrete paths, and a short distance on singletrack. We ride through quiet villages into many branches of the Mekong River. Talk with locals when waiting for a ferry coming back to take us to a further side. We will have our lunch served in the village. The routes in the afternoon are shady, small concrete paths, narrow, just enough for two bicycles but the scenery is nice. We will have many stops at some family workshops making coconut fibers, and another making furniture before we cross the Mekong River by ferry to Tra Vinh city.

Day 2: Tra Vinh – Cau Ke - Can Tho (B/L/D) (60 - 85 km)
Tra Vinh is a small town and it is not a touristy destination for tourists traveling by bus. So it is really quiet at night. After 8:30 pm everything seems to be closed and almost asleep. Tra Vinh province is considered the homeland of Khmer and there are numerous Khmer temples in the province. A full day cycling of today is a chance you are not only learning cultures but also cycling on deeply to traditional villages of Khmer, stop and visit some thatch houses, experience the ways of living, and visit some colorful temples on our way cycling through Tieu Can to Cau Ke. After we have lunch in town, a fantastic bicycling begins after just half an hour transfer by van/bus to Vinh Xuan. We continue to explore beautiful countryside villages by cycling along canals, rivers fruit orchards, and rice paddy fields. We end upcycle and getting on a van/bus to Can Tho to check in hotel.

Day 3: Can Tho - Sadec- Cao Lanh (B/L/D) (35 - 50 km)
There are two most interesting sites that we must see because one has funs and the other is related to French Indochina. The first site is a busy floating market in Can Tho and we are going to go there by boat. The second site is an ancient house of Huynh Thuy Le. Who was in loved with Marguerite Duras then the story became a movie. After we watched the floating market of Cai Rang, a short drive took us to Can Tho bridge to start biking. From Binh Minh to Sadec town, we bike on country back roads, through sweet potatoes, family workshops making rice powder, brick factories, and pedaling along canals busy with many boats moving up and down. Our delicious lunch is served at Huynh Thuy Le's house and we have a rest before we ride to Cao Lanh city. We bike through the village of flowers in the countryside of Sadec, then we keep our afternoon’ cycling through many small villages through mango gardens, rivers and we have a van/bus transfer to Cao Lanh city.

Day 4:  Cao Lanh - Xeo Quyt base - Ho Chi Minh (B/L) (20 - 45 km)
Cao Lanh is a new town after Vietnam War. Foreigners are rarely seen in this town because it is not a nice place for bus tours. But bike routes are so unique. The place we start biking is about 30 minutes transfer by vehicle from Cao Lanh city. The quiet rural back road by small rivers gives you a fantastic ride with beautiful scenery along the way to Xeo Quyt, the former base of the Viet Cong. A local guide will lead you the way to see some shelters and a sampan rowing boat taking you into the forest. If time permitted, our last ride is about 25 km on a single track, through rice fields, irrigation networks, and fruit orchards. We end up cycling on the high road and having lunch before two hours and a half returning to HCM by vehicle.

Comprised of dense green rice paddies and lazy, winding rivers, the Mekong Delta is like no other region in Vietnam. Whether firmly on land or floating with the river current, this region is flush with wildlife, historical sights, and incredible landscapes. The River of Nine Dragons, as locals know the area, is where the Mekong splinters into nine separate branches, crisscrossing low landscapes before reaching the sea. Life moves much more slowly here and is often surrounded by water. You'll find even homes, farms, and markets take on an aquatic adaptation in the Mekong Delta.

TOP THINGS TO DO IN THE MEKONG DELTA:

Visit on-the-water villages

From the quiet towns of Mỹ Tho and Bến Tre to the floating markets of Cần Thơ, the flower farms of Sa Đéc to the stunning, waterlogged landscapes of Châu Đốc, there is plenty to keep you occupied in the Delta. Head to Mỹ Tho or Bến Tre for verdant islands containing everything from fruit orchards to coconut candy factories. Veer west toward Vinh Long instead and you'll pass Cái Bè, where a French colonial cathedral stands given the town's famed floating market.

See floating markets and ancient houses

Cần Thơ is the region's largest city. Fast developing into a proper hub, this laid-back riverside town boasts its collection of cultural sights, such as the Cái Răng floating market, the most famous of its kind in the Mekong. Other attractions include the Bình Thuỷ Ancient House, a prime example of French colonial architecture.

Step inside the house of The Lover

Sa Đéc houses the former residence of Huỳnh Thủy Lê, a wealthy Chinese businessman with whom Saigon-born French novelist Marguerite Duras had an affair. Their relationship later served as the inspiration for Duras' novel L'Amant (The Lover) and its 1992 film adaptation.

Go bird-watching

Nature lovers will appreciate the Delta's collection of wildlife sanctuaries, particularly the beautifully green Tràm Chim National Park, home to a quarter of all bird species found in Vietnam, including the sarus crane, the world's tallest flying bird. Just a stone's throw from the Cambodian border, Tra Su Bird Sanctuary holds plenty of winged wildlife in its flooded forests.

The Weather in the Mekong Delta

Boats are the primary means of transportation in the Mekong Delta so traveling during a season when the water level is high and the temperature is cool is highly recommended.

There are two main seasons in the Mekong Delta: a rainy season and a dry season. The temperature in both seasons is generally comfortable, although some months (November to January) are considered more comfortable for traveling.

Dry Season: December to April

From December to the end of April, Vietnam gets a break from all the rain. During this season, while occasional rains still occur, you can expect clearer blue skies, brilliant green landscapes, and lower levels of humidity.

The average temperature from December to February in the Mekong Delta ranges from about 22ºC at night to about 32ºC in the daytime.

It starts to get hot in March with a temperature of about 34ºC in the daytime and it reaches its highest temperatures in April and May (about 35–38ºC in the daytime).

Rainy Season: May to November

The rainy season begins in May and continues through most of November. While rainy, this is also the hottest time of the year and the humidity is often uncomfortably high. The heaviest rainfall occurs in June and July.

This period is considered to be the low season for traveling in the Mekong Delta. What is the advantage of traveling in the low season?
